AI Radar: what's trending in AI, and what we covered
Two views on one timeline, clearly labelled. Everyone's talking about measures attention outside our site: Hacker News, Reddit and GitHub. What we covered counts our own daily news. The Gap view shows where the two disagree. Press play to watch names heat up and cool down.

How the AI Radar works
Everyone's talking about (outside signals)
- Hacker News, through the free Algolia search API (
hn.algolia.com/api/v1/search_by_date,tags=storyandtags=comment, exact spelling, no typo tolerance). One query per directory name (in quotes when it has several words). Every hit is checked again on our side: the name must appear as a whole word with the same capitals, and the longest name wins ("Google Cloud" is not also counted as "Google"). Per day we count stories, comments and the stories' points. When a name has more than 1,000 hits in a day (the API's limit), the rest is estimated from the checked sample. Data: 18 October 2026 to 29 October 2026 (12 days). - Reddit: r/LocalLLaMA, r/OpenAI, r/ClaudeAI, r/singularity, r/artificial, r/MachineLearning. Reddit's public JSON search is blocked for our script (blocked (HTTP 403)), so we read each subreddit's public RSS feeds instead:
/top/.rss?t=day&limit=100,/top/.rss?t=week&limit=100and/new/.rss?limit=100, 8 seconds apart, with a named user agent. RSS has no votes or comment counts, so Reddit counts posts that name something, and only the newest 100 posts per subreddit are visible, so busy subreddits are a sample. A day only goes into the score when all 6 subreddits have that day's newest or top-of-day posts in the feeds; older days only have top-of-the-week leftovers, so they are shown in the side panel but not scored. Scored days: 28 October 2026 to 29 October 2026 (2 days). - GitHub: stars added per day for the 20 tools whose own repo we track (
api.github.com/repos/OWNER/REPO, no login). First star count taken 29 October 2026, 22:47 GMT for 18 of 20 repos (Flue, Marketing Skills (Corey Haines) failed: rate limit or connection error). Stars per day start from the next daily run (the difference between two daily counts). No backfill: GitHub's list of who starred a repo and when needs a login for this script (11 repos answered 401 Unauthorized), 3 more hit the 60-requests-an-hour limit, and stops at 40,000 entries for the biggest repos (Awesome LLM Apps, CLI-Anything, Crawl4AI, Mem0). Scored days: no days yet. - X: not included yet. The data format has a slot for it.
- Exact search terms (235 names, same terms for Hacker News and the Reddit matching): Trending box query:

Short or common names ("Cursor", "Lovable", "Gemini", "Grok", "Notion" and about 100 more) only count when the same story, comment or post also mentions AI (AI, LLM, agent, model names and similar). Names that are too common to match safely (for example "Poke", "Buzz", "Town", "Haiku") get no outside signal at all. A company also counts when one of its own products is named.
- Weighting: for each source we take each name's share of that source's total for the day (Hacker News: the average of its shares of stories, comments and points). The outside score is the plain average of the sources that have data that day, with equal weights, and the map shows its 3-day average. GitHub only covers 20 tools, so its share is split among fewer names and lifts those tools; the panel shows each source separately.
- Days are UTC calendar days (the same as UK time in winter). The latest day is collected before it ends, so it is marked as in progress. A day with no outside data is shown as a gap. Last collected: 29 October 2026, 22:47 GMT.
What we covered (our own data)
- Sources: our daily AI news (each day counts once), Worth testing items and Hype or Fact? checks. The daily search tip is left out. A story that appears in the news and as a check on the same day counts once.
- Heat: our stories naming a company or tool over the last 3 days. Lines on the map join names that came up in the same story of ours. Gaps: 18 October 2026: No daily news file for this day; only hype-or-fact, worth-testing.; 30 October 2026: No data file for this day. A debrief exists but has not been imported into a news file yet.; 31 October 2026: No data file for this day. A debrief exists but has not been imported into a news file yet..
Gap
- Hot outside, not covered by us: outside share of at least 0.5% and none of our stories in the last 3 days. Covered by us, quiet outside: our heat of 2 or more and an outside share under 0.1%.
Blind spots
- English-language sources only. No TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn or Discord, and X isn't included yet. Hacker News and these subreddits lean towards developers. Matching is by name, so nicknames, misspellings and names we haven't listed are missed, and a few false matches can slip through. Only names already in the directory are scored; the "Trending, not in the directory yet" list is how new names show up.
