DoorDash: outside AI agents have placed only 'several hundred' orders
On its third-quarter earnings call (29 October), DoorDash's CEO Tony Xu said third-party AI agents have produced only 'several hundred' orders in total, in a quarter of roughly a billion orders. DoorDash is putting its effort into its own agents (Ask DoorDash and Text DoorDash) and into an MCP ordering connector, in beta, that lets companies such as Vercel and Cognition order food for staff from inside their AI tools. DoorDash says Ask DoorDash builds baskets five times faster with about 50% higher basket value; those are the company's own figures.
Why it mattersA useful reality check on 'agentic commerce'. Shoppers aren't yet sending agents out to buy for them in meaningful numbers, so don't rebuild your shop for AI agents yet. The practical use today is business ordering inside the tools staff already use.
