Mistral Large 4 ('Le Chonk') is out as open weights
Mistral has made the improved Mistral Large 4, nicknamed 'Le Chonk', downloadable: a model of roughly one trillion parameters with a one-million-token context window that reads text and images in more than 160 languages and was trained in Europe. Mistral says it's the best open model on Cognition's FrontierCode coding test and good at refusing malicious cyber requests; those are Mistral's own claims, and Artificial Analysis' independent index still places it behind the strongest Chinese open models. Commercial use is allowed under Mistral's modified MIT licence, but self-hosting needs a rack of top-end GPUs. Via the API it costs $0.70 per million input tokens and $2.10 per million output tokens.
Why it mattersA credible European choice for clients who want an open, auditable model or EU hosting, at a low API price. Try it on one of your real coding or agent tasks before switching.
