Boris Cherny: how he uses Claude Code (Code with Claude talk, May 2025)

A 27-minute talk by Boris Cherny, who created Claude Code, at Anthropic's 'Code with Claude' event in May 2025; @oaklinelx is a repost account. Unlike our earlier Boris notes (big-picture interviews), this one has real prompts and commands. Advanced level; you need a terminal and some coding. Fact or hype: fact. It's genuinely Boris and genuinely practical, one of the clearest introductions to how Claude Code's creator works. But it's 18 months old, as the post says: slides and screenshots only, some commands and keys have changed, and his prediction that people might stop using code editors by the end of 2025 didn't happen.

Try this

  1. Install with 'npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code' (needs Node.js; check today's install docs first). 0:38
  2. Run /terminal-setup so Shift+Enter gives you a new line. 2:48
  3. Use your computer's dictation for long prompts. 3:35
  4. Start by asking questions about your codebase before letting it edit anything. 4:05
  5. Ask it to look through the git history to explain why a piece of code exists. 5:50
  6. Ask for a plan and tell it to wait for your approval before writing code. 8:49
  7. Finish a change with 'commit, push, pr'. 9:10
  8. Add an internal tool with 'claude mcp add <name> -- <command>'. 10:18
  9. Give it a feedback loop: tests, or screenshots it can compare against. 11:15
  10. Put a CLAUDE.md file in the project root with your commands and conventions. 12:30
