What WebMCP (Google Chrome) does
Proposed web standard that lets a website expose structured 'tools' (e.g. search_products, add_to_cart, book_table) to AI agents running in the browser, via JavaScript (document.modelContext.registerTool) or annotated HTML forms, so agents call your site's functions instead of guessing at buttons and fields. Drafted in the W3C Web Machine Learning Community Group (editors from Microsoft and Google; not a W3C Standard). Chrome origin trial from Chrome 149 (extended to Chrome 162), local testing via chrome://flags/#enable-webmcp-testing; Edge origin trial from Edge 150. On 19 Oct 2026 Google promoted three open-source helper tools: webmcp-extension (Chrome extension to inspect, test and debug a page's WebMCP tools with Google/OpenAI/Anthropic/Ollama models or on-device Gemini Nano; Apache-2.0), webmcp-types (TypeScript definitions with type inference from inputSchema; npm webmcp-types, MIT) and webmcp-skills (a 'build-webmcp-tools' agent skill for Claude Code, Cursor, Gemini CLI etc. covering tool design, annotations for consequential actions, security/prompt-injection defence, evals and React/Angular/vanilla/HTML implementation; Apache-2.0).
Good for
- Make a booking, shop or support site usable by AI browser agents (search, add to cart, book, submit a form) on your terms
- Get ahead on 'agent readiness' alongside AI SEO, e.g. Lighthouse 'Agentic browsing' audits
- Have a developer or coding agent scaffold and audit WebMCP tools with the official skill, then test them with the extension
Try this in 10 minutes
- Turn on the Chrome flag and try Google's demos (Le Petit Bistro booking, travel, pizza maker) with the extension or Model Context Tool Inspector, to see agent-calls-tool vs. agent-scrapes-page.
- Point a coding agent with the skill at a simple test site: "Analyze https://... for WebMCP user journeys" and see what tools it proposes for a real small-business site.
- Add one read-only tool (e.g. search/menu lookup) and one consequential one (booking) and check the confirmation prompts.

Latest update
- 2026-10-27: Experimental WebMCP Eval CLI released to measure agent pass rates on your WebMCP tools.
- : Chrome for Developers restated 'WebMCP isn't replacing MCP': MCP = backend, persistent, works anywhere; WebMCP = tab-bound tools on your live website with the user present. Use both.
- : Experimental WebMCP Eval CLI (27 Oct) to track pass rates and debug how LLM agents call your site's WebMCP tools, since agent behaviour varies where unit tests can't catch it.
- : Google's Chrome team highlighted three open-source WebMCP tools: webmcp-extension (inspect/test/debug a site's tools), webmcp-types (TypeScript definitions) and the webmcp-skills 'build-webmcp-tools' agent skill. WebMCP itself is still an origin trial (Chrome 149-162, Edge 150).
