HYPE OR FACT? · CHECKED 19 OCTOBER 2026
Google Chrome's three new tools for WebMCP
OUR VERDICT
FactOur original verdict: “The tools are real (fact); 'WebMCP is here' would be hype.”
THE CLAIM
“'Three new tools for WebMCP': a Chrome extension to test WebMCP tools, TypeScript definitions and an agent skill for building them.”
What’s actually true
- All three exist, are open source and active: webmcp-extension (GoogleChromeLabs, Apache-2.0, 'not an officially supported Google product'), webmcp-types (MIT, on npm) and the build-webmcp-tools skill in GoogleChromeLabs/webmcp-tools.
- WebMCP itself is a W3C Community Group draft, not a W3C Standard. It's experimental in Chrome (flag and origin trial) with no ship date; Safari/WebKit formally opposes it and Mozilla is neutral.
- Nobody's customers are arriving via WebMCP agents at scale yet.
