Karpathy's weekend hack: HackerTube, the YouTube videos Hacker News keeps recommending
Andrej Karpathy got fed up with YouTube's recommendations, so he had Claude go through 20 years of Hacker News comments and keep only the videos people repeatedly recommend: 6,454 in all, from about 40,000 comments. The result, hackertube.org, has no logins (your likes and history stay in your browser) and uses a frame from mid-video instead of clickbait thumbnails. All the data is a single zip you can give to your own AI agent. He says it took about 2 hours in Claude Code with Opus 5.5. His only manual steps were a YouTube API key, a server and the domain; Claude did the deploying and hardening.
Why it mattersIt's a useful site in its own right, and a clear example of how far one person with a coding agent can now go in an afternoon. The figures check out on the site itself, but "2 hours" comes from an expert who knew exactly what to ask for.
