Karpathy's HackerTube: 20 years of Hacker News video picks, built with Claude in ~2 hours

OUR VERDICT

Fact

Our original verdict: “Fact or hype: fact. The site is live and matches the description, its own numbers agree with the post, and the data download is real. The "2 hours" and "few-shotted for breakfast" framing comes from an expert who knew exactly what to ask for.”

THE CLAIM

“"Weekend hack: HackerTube." Andrej Karpathy says he had Claude filter 43M comments from 20 years of Hacker News down to 6,454 videos that keep being recommended, in about 2 hours with Claude Code and Opus 5.5. He says his only manual steps were a YouTube API key, a server and the domain.”

What’s actually true

  • The site is live at hackertube.org. There are no accounts: likes, history and Watch later are kept only in your browser, and videos play through YouTube's privacy-enhanced embed.
  • The numbers on the site match the post. Its own stats show 6,454 videos, 39,834 recommending comments from 15,041 different people, covering 2007–2026. The 'roughly 7,000' on the About page is the shortlist before Claude read each comment (at least three people, in at least three different months), not a different total.
  • The data download is real. It's a 17.8 MB zip (ODC-By licence) with a DATA.md written for AI agents, the video and comment records, the topic list and embeddings, so you can point Claude Code or another agent at it and build your own version. YouTube's own metadata isn't included, because YouTube's terms don't allow it; DATA.md explains how to fetch it with your own key.
  • The site's credits say Claude Opus 5.5 built it in Claude Code (data pipeline, search, recommendations and the site), with teams of Claude Sonnet 5.5 agents writing the comment labels, video cards and topics. That fits the post.
  • '43M comments' is Karpathy's figure and wasn't counted independently. It's plausible: Hacker News has about 50.3M items in total, most of them comments. The source is the public open-index/hacker-news archive on Hugging Face.
  • '~2 hours' and 'few-shotted for breakfast' describe one of the best-known AI researchers, who knows exactly what to ask for and how to check the result. The model time and API costs of reading about 40,000 comments aren't stated. Expect a first attempt to take longer.

Cost

The site is free to use and the data is free to download. To build your own, you'd need a Claude plan or API credits, plus a free Google Cloud key for the YouTube metadata, a small server and a domain.

USE IT IF

Anyone tired of the YouTube algorithm who wants talks, lectures and documentaries that technical people keep recommending. Also builders who want a clean, agent-ready dataset to remix.

SKIP IT IF

Anyone expecting a non-expert to rebuild something like this in 2 hours. This is a recommendations site, not an AI tool you sign up for.
