What CapCut does
ByteDance's all-in-one video editor (desktop, web, mobile and tablet) with templates, auto-captions, text-to-speech, background removal and a growing set of AI generation tools, including ByteDance's Seedance video models and Seedream images, sold via AI credits. Its newest step is agent integrations: an official 'CapCut × Codex' plugin for the ChatGPT desktop app turns a prompt or your clips into an editable draft that you refine in chat or in the CapCut editor. A full CapCut plugin inside ChatGPT was announced as 'coming soon' on 24 Oct 2026.
Good for
- Free plan: upload a 60-second talking-head clip, auto-caption it, and export a 9:16 version for Reels/TikTok/Shorts
- Outside the US on the ChatGPT desktop app: install the CapCut × Codex plugin from capcut.com/tools/capcut-x-codex, give it 5 product photos and a brief, and see how usable the rough cut is (read each step Codex wants to run before approving)
- Turn a blog post into a 30-second explainer: paste the script, use text-to-speech and stock footage, then fix timing by hand
- Make one branded template (fonts, colours, caption style) and reuse it for a weekly short-video series
Try this in 10 minutes
- Free plan: upload a 60-second talking-head clip, auto-caption it, and export a 9:16 version for Reels/TikTok/Shorts. Use the free plan: pick one real example from your own business and try just that.
- Turn a blog post into a 30-second explainer: paste the script, use text-to-speech and stock footage, then fix timing by hand. Put the result next to how you do it today. Is it faster, cheaper or better?
- Make one branded template (fonts, colours, caption style) and reuse it for a weekly short-video series. Note what you had to fix by hand before you'd show it to a customer.

Honest take
Some claims not independently checked
- OpenAI's head of partnerships and head of creator product were listed speakers at CapCut World LA, so the partnership looks real, but it isn't live in ChatGPT yet.
- What's usable now is the official CapCut × Codex plugin.
- You install it by pasting a CapCut-provided prompt into Codex in the ChatGPT desktop app (PC), which has Codex fetch and run CapCut's install instructions, so review each step.
- CapCut's page says 'free' to start and 'availability may vary by app version, account, and region'.
- Third-party trackers (Dotsfeed, Voyager) report CapCut says it's outside the US for now; I couldn't see that line myself because my fetch was geolocated to the US.
- Unofficial reports of mobile/web in mid-November are unconfirmed.
- Many X demos look like coordinated promotion.
- Background: CapCut is owned by ByteDance and went offline in the US alongside TikTok in January 2025 under the US TikTok divestment law before returning.
- Treat ByteDance data handling as a consideration for client work.
- UK: CapCut is available; a CapCut World London event is scheduled for November 2026.
What we couldn’t verify
- Fact vs hype: The ChatGPT plugin is an announcement ('coming soon'), with no launch date, regions or pricing.
