Token Optimizer cuts coding-agent context waste
Alex Greenshpun's Token Optimizer is a plugin that hooks into Claude Code and other coding agents to cut wasted context: delta re-reads, file skeletons, bash compression, compaction checkpoints and a local tokens-and-dollars dashboard. The repo has about 2.9k stars and ships under PolyForm Noncommercial. Its own 30-day snapshot claims about $598 and 24.8M tokens saved, but most of that dollar figure is estimated model-routing, not metered cuts. A third-party X comparison of one task put the plugin at about −18% tokens. Fact or hype: Partly fact. Real tooling and open methodology; headline savings are largely self-reported estimates.
Why it mattersIf you burn context on Claude Code or similar agents, automatic compression and a honest local dashboard are useful. Read the licence before work use, treat the author's dollar total as an upper-bound style estimate, and compare it with lighter options (rules files, other MCP caches) on your own workload. We haven't tested it hands-on.
