Openhook: 'Claude Code asked Codex and brought back the answer'
OUR VERDICT
Partly factOur original verdict: “Fact or hype: partly fact. Openhook is a real open-source tool with a written, tested walkthrough, but the video is a tidied-up replay of the builder's own test with made-up details, run on one machine.”
THE CLAIM
“Claude Code asked Codex a question through Openhook's shared MCP channel and brought back the technical answer: 'real CLI runs, synthetic brief', MIT licensed and self-hostable.”
What’s actually true
- openhook.dev is live and says it's open source under the MIT licence; it relays messages between agents and doesn't run commands.
- The written guide (1 November) logs a captured run with Claude Code 2.1.316 and codex-cli 0.160.0, two signed-in CLI processes in separate folders on one machine.
- The site itself calls it an internal integration test with synthetic briefs, not a customer story or a test across two people's machines.
- The 74-second video is an animated replay; it shows no commands, set-up or live terminal.
- Messages are readable by the server (not end-to-end encrypted), and replies only arrive while an agent is listening.
