Firecrawl: "headless Clay for agents… 88% cheaper than Clay at scale"
OUR VERDICT
Partly factOur original verdict: “Fact or hype: partly fact. The 88% figure holds up on Firecrawl's own footnoted comparison, and we got the same answer from both companies' price lists. But "headless Clay" oversells it: you get a handful of contact-data providers that Firecrawl resells, not Clay's workflow product, and the 250M people aren't Firecrawl's own data.”
THE CLAIM
“Introducing headless Clay for agents. → Search 250M+ people & 26M+ companies → Get emails, job & company data → 1000 credits/month free → 88% cheaper than Clay at scale. Run all of your enrichment flows in ChatGPT, Claude, Grokbot, and beyond!”
What’s actually true
- The 88% is real on Firecrawl's terms. Its footnote compares Firecrawl Standard billed yearly ($83 a month for 100,000 credits, about $0.00083 a credit) with a typical Clay Launch enriched record of 6 to 20 data credits for a profile plus work email, at list prices on 2 Nov 2026. Clay Launch billed yearly is $113 a month for 30,000 data credits a year, about $0.045 a credit, so a record costs about $0.27–$0.90. On Firecrawl a FullEnrich lookup (10 credits) plus work email (30) is 40 credits, about $0.033: 88% cheaper than Clay's cheapest case and about 96% cheaper than its dearest. Clay also charges a separate fee for "actions" (from $54 a month), which the comparison leaves out.
- "At scale" means the $83 Standard plan or higher. On the free plan, 1,000 credits buy about 25–33 contacts with a work email a month. On Hobby ($16 a month) a record costs about $0.11–$0.14, still cheaper than Clay but not 88%.
- "Headless Clay" is a stretch. Clay is a workflow product: tables, automatic fallback across 150+ data partners, AI research, CRM sync, signals and an email sequencer. Firecrawl's People category has 12 providers, and only four sell contact data (Apollo, FullEnrich, People Data Labs and Data Legion). The rest are public registers: US House votes, Senate financial disclosures, a New Jersey licence lookup, NPI, sanctions lists, Seattle council contacts and a podcast database. Your agent does the workflow part. Firecrawl does let you set a provider order for LinkedIn lookups, which works like a simple fallback. Clay also lets you bring your own provider keys, which avoids its data credits altogether.
- The data isn't Firecrawl's. Every people record comes from a third-party broker that Firecrawl resells under paid agreements, and an admin on your account has to accept each provider's terms before an agent can use it. Firecrawl doesn't say which providers the "250M+ people and 26M+ companies" figures come from, and its own counts move around: on 20 Oct it said "270M+ company and people records".
- "11 providers" on the link card is already out of date: the page listed 12 on 2 Nov.
- Prices are moving. Our 20 Oct directory entry had FullEnrich work emails at 20 credits and mobiles at 175; on 2 Nov the page showed 30 and 300.
- Compared with Monid, which we covered today: Monid is pay-per-call from a prepaid balance with no subscription, across about 2,800 tools from 90+ providers, mostly at the provider's own rate. Firecrawl uses subscription credits and adds its own web search, scraping and indexes. For contact lookups, compare the per-record price on both before choosing.
- UK/EU users: a named person's work email is personal data under UK and EU GDPR. If you store or use these records, you're responsible for having a lawful basis (usually legitimate interests, with a written assessment), telling people within a month where you got their data (Article 14), and honouring objections. Under UK PECR you can email companies without consent, but not sole traders or some partnerships. The data comes from US brokers, and buying it doesn't make your outreach compliant.
- We didn't run paid lookups, so we haven't tested data accuracy. Firecrawl publishes its own company-enrichment benchmark (21 Oct).

Cost
Free: 1,000 credits a month (about 25–33 contacts with a work email). Standard: $83/month billed yearly for 100,000 credits (about 2,500–3,300 contacts). A profile plus work email is roughly 30–40 credits.
