'Release week': Claude Mythos 5.5 and GPT-6.2 'confirmed'

OUR VERDICT

Partly fact

Our original verdict: “Fact or hype: partly fact. The traces are real and suggest both labs have new versions close, but neither Anthropic nor OpenAI has announced anything, so 'confirmed' is overstated.”

THE CLAIM

“'Confirmed. GPT-6.2 very close', with 'gpt-6.2-astra' showing in Codex usage analytics, and a screenshot of Anthropic's Mythos page code reading 'Claude Claude Mythos 5.5'.”

What’s actually true

  • Anthropic's Mythos page did carry a hidden heading and logo alt text reading 'Mythos 5.5' on the afternoon of 1 November; independent checks saw it change back to 5.1 by about 17:16 UTC. The visible page always said Mythos 5.1.
  • 'gpt-6.2-astra' did appear in some users' Codex usage breakdowns, first spotted by @TokenGremlin.
  • But the Codex model picker still says GPT-6 Astra, and asking Codex for gpt-6.2-astra returns 'model not found'.
  • Neither Anthropic's newsroom and model docs nor OpenAI has named either model. Traces like these often come before a launch, but they aren't a release date.
  • Don't change plans or budgets on a page-source screenshot; wait for the release notes.
