"We made Grokbot with unlimited usage": Reason's coding agent with "no limits"

OUR VERDICT

Hype

Our original verdict: “Fact or hype: hype. Reason is a real coding agent, but its own documentation contradicts the headline: your connected subscriptions keep their limits, Reason's plans have weekly credit caps, "free" means a 3-day trial with a card, and it isn't Grok Bot.”

THE CLAIM

“"We made Grokbot with unlimited usage! Meet Reason. Bring your own Claude or Codex Subs, and code with a frontier agent that has no limits! Try it for free." Posted on 2 Nov, quoting Elon Musk's reply that the cost of serving Grok Bot was "unsustainably high relative to revenue".”

What’s actually true

  • Real product: Reason is a working cloud coding agent from Reason Machines, a two-person Y Combinator (P26) startup founded in 2026 by Adi Singh and Sven Myhre. It runs tasks on its own cloud computer, works in your GitHub repos and opens pull requests. It has a web app, a Mac app, Slack, an API and an MCP server.
  • "Unlimited" and "no limits" don't hold, by Reason's own docs: work on your connected subscriptions "keeps its limits", Pro includes 1,250 credits a week and Max 5,000, and past that you buy credits. What Reason does is switch to your next connected account, then to paid credits, when one hits its limit. That's overflow, not unlimited use.
  • "Try it for free" means a 3-day free trial of the $50-a-month Pro plan, with a card required. Reason's own comparison pages say it has no free plan.
  • "Grokbot" is used loosely. Reason is a coding agent with some always-on features (memory, scheduled Loops, Slack), not xAI's Grok Bot, and its site says it isn't affiliated with or endorsed by xAI. It also sells itself as an add-on to Grok Bot, through an MCP server that hands coding work to Reason.
  • Bringing your Codex (ChatGPT) plan looks like a supported route: OpenAI runs a "Sign in with ChatGPT" programme that lets approved apps use your Plus or Pro plan, with your plan's limits applying. We couldn't confirm Reason's listing in it.
  • Bringing your Claude plan is the risky part. Anthropic's published Claude Code terms say third-party developers may not offer Claude.ai login in their own apps or route requests through Free, Pro, Max or Ultra plan credentials on users' behalf, and that Anthropic may enforce this without notice. Reason says you can "Connect Claude" with Pro or Max and run Claude models on it, and doesn't explain how that fits those terms. Unless it has a separate deal with Anthropic, connected Claude accounts could be cut off.
  • Timing: the post rides on the 1 Nov Grok Bot usage-limit complaints and Musk's comment on serving costs (see our related pick). It had about 360,000 views and 2,300 bookmarks by the morning of 2 Nov.

Cost

Pro $50 a month (3-day free trial with a card), Max $200 a month. On top of that you pay for whatever subscriptions or API keys you connect.

USE IT IF

Developers who already pay for several AI plans and want one agent that works in their repos, opens pull requests and spreads work across those plans.

SKIP IT IF

Anyone expecting truly unlimited or free use, a replacement for Grok Bot's non-coding work, or a safe way to use a Claude Pro or Max plan outside Anthropic's own apps.
