Claude Code: type 'ultrathink' mid-turn to make Claude think harder
OUR VERDICT
Partly factOur original verdict: “Fact or hype: partly fact. The screen shows Claude Code acknowledging 'Deeper reasoning requested for this turn' when you type ultrathink mid-turn, but not that answers improve, and the ctrl+x step isn't needed to trigger it.”
THE CLAIM
“Type 'ultrathink' while Claude is working (plus ctrl+x) to make Claude think hardest for that one turn.”
What’s actually true
- The 12-second silent, sped-up recording shows a green box, 'Deeper reasoning requested for this turn', appear as soon as ultrathink is typed mid-turn, without pressing Enter.
- The word then sits as a queued message; ctrl+x then ctrl+s sends a queued message straight away, and Up edits it.
- Nothing in the clip shows the answer getting better; it's a UI acknowledgement of the request.
- Low to moderate skill: Claude Code in a terminal, no coding.
