Greg Isenberg: 'SaaS is dead', and what replaces it

An 11-minute whiteboard talk from @gregisenberg (The Startup Ideas Podcast), watched end to end. His argument: AI makes software cheap to build, so per-seat tools lose their moat; the new model gives the tool away free and charges for agents that do the work, or for human services on top. Verdict: strategy, not a tutorial; no coding needed to apply the thinking, though building it needs real product work. 'SaaS is dead' is a hook, he glosses over maintenance and security, and his claim that the outcomes market is bigger than software comes with no figures. He also posted a warning about inflated revenue claims from founders, worth remembering whenever you read a startup's ARR on X.

Try this

  1. Turn one useful internal tool or calculator into a free lead magnet. 03:47
  2. Decide what data the free tool collects that would make your paid offer better (with clear consent). 04:34
  3. Add one feature that gets more useful as more people use it, such as shared templates or benchmarks. 04:46
  4. Sell 'done for you': an agent that does the task inside the tool, not just the tool. 05:42
  5. Offer a human layer on top, such as review, coaching or setup. 06:04
  6. Test the funnel of free tracker to paid personalised plan or coach (his calorie-app example). 06:45
  7. Try a 'product studio': several small niche free tools feeding one paid service. 07:35
  8. Experiment with usage- or outcome-based pricing for the agent upsell instead of a flat fee. 08:30
  9. If you sell to small businesses, assume the basic software layer has to be free to compete. 09:20
  10. For enterprise buyers, pitch security, compliance and support rather than features. 09:55
