Lee Robinson's Stanford lecture: how always-on AI agents work

A 45-minute lecture shared by @Saboo_Shubham_. The slides name Lee Robinson (@leerob), Stanford CS146S, 8 October 2026, with X/xAI and SpaceX branding; we couldn't independently confirm the speaker is him, so the identity comes from the slides. It covers how agents moved from copy-paste to running in the background on servers, sleeping, saving their state and waking up when something happens. Verdict: the clearest explanation we've seen of 'agents that work while you sleep'; advanced and coding needed if you want to build one, but the ideas help anyone choosing an agent product. Claims that hallucinated tool calls are 'mostly solved' and that auto-review is 'more secure than humans' come with no data. Timestamps are approximate. It has ten things to test.

Try this

  1. Run your agent on a server, not in a terminal on your laptop, so it keeps working when you close the lid. 00:49
  2. Let a separate, smaller model approve safe actions automatically and check with you on the rest. 05:06
  3. Keep the agent's memory, skills and routines in plain Markdown files you can read and edit. 08:30
  4. Give the agent a browser or virtual desktop for websites that have no API. 13:10
  5. Use durable workflows (such as Temporal) instead of simple job queues so tasks pick up again after a crash. 16:17
  6. Give the agent a single 'send to user' tool and let the app decide how to display the message. 18:20
  7. Make the agent try the cheapest option first: its memory, then an API, web search, a browser, and only then ask you. 21:31
  8. Keep the start of your system prompt fixed so prompt caching keeps costs down. 26:15
  9. Have the agent save long outputs to a file and pass back only the file path. 28:46
  10. Summarise conversations early, while the cache is still warm. 36:26
