What Knock does

Customer messaging infrastructure for software products, now pitched as 'agentic customer engagement'. You design workflows once (triggers, delays, branches, batching/digests, user preferences) and Knock sends the messages across email, in-app feed/inbox, in-app guides (banners, modals, tooltips), push, SMS and chat (Slack, Microsoft Teams). It covers transactional, lifecycle and product messages plus one-off broadcasts. AI layer: a dashboard 'Knock agent' that builds and edits workflows, templates, broadcasts and audiences by chat and answers analytics questions; an 'agent' workflow step that runs an LLM prompt (e.g. Claude Haiku/Sonnet) to enrich or personalise each message; a remote MCP server (mcp.knock.app/mcp, OAuth); a Claude connector and ChatGPT/Codex, Cursor and Grok Bot plugins; a CLI (@knocklabs/cli) and open-source agent skills. For SaaS founders, product and growth teams and developers; you still connect your own email/SMS/push providers for production sending.

Good for

  • Add the Knock connector to Claude (claude.ai/directory/connectors/knock, sign in with Knock) and ask: 'Build an onboarding journey: welcome email on day 0, tips email on day 3 if they haven't created a project.' Review the draft workflow in the dashboard before it goes live
  • In the dashboard, press Cmd+J and ask the Knock agent 'Which channel drives the most engagement this month?' to get a chart and a plain-language answer
  • Add an agent step to a weekly digest workflow that summarises each user's activity, and test it in the editor (test runs don't use credits)
  • Use Knock's built-in test email provider to send yourself a trial message before you connect SendGrid, Resend or Postmark
  • Claude Code: claude mcp add --transport http knock mcp.knock.app, then /mcp to sign in and ask it to create a test user and trigger a workflow

Try this in 10 minutes

  1. Add the Knock connector to Claude (claude.ai/directory/connectors/knock, sign in with Knock) and ask: 'Build an onboarding journey: welcome email on day 0, tips email on day 3 if they haven't created a project.' Review the draft workflow in the dashboard before it goes live. Use the free plan: pick one real example from your own business and try just that.
  2. In the dashboard, press Cmd+J and ask the Knock agent 'Which channel drives the most engagement this month?' to get a chart and a plain-language answer. Put the result next to how you do it today. Is it faster, cheaper or better?
  3. Add an agent step to a weekly digest workflow that summarises each user's activity, and test it in the editor (test runs don't use credits). Note what you had to fix by hand before you'd show it to a customer.

Honest take

Some claims not independently checked

  • The 'agentic' rebrand sits on top of it, and the AI pieces are real and documented (docs.knock.app/ai: agent, agent function, MCP server, CLI, skills, plugins).
  • Caveats: (1) it's built for a software product with users.
  • You need to send it user data and events (SDK/API, or a CDP such as Segment), so a no-coder without an app has little to send.
  • (2) Production email/SMS/push go through your own providers; Knock's own email provider is for testing only.
  • (3) Free tier is generous for trying it (10K messages), but the next step is $250/month, a big jump for a small business.
  • Agent steps burn credits ($0.01 each beyond the allowance), and per-model credit rates aren't on the pricing page.
  • (4) The MCP server and agent have full read/write access to messaging configs, so review before publishing and use service tokens carefully.
  • Compare with Customer.io, Braze, Courier, Novu (open source) and Loops for simpler email.
  • X: @knocklabs.

What we couldn’t verify

  • Fact vs hype: Knock is an established notification platform.
  • Claims like 'customer engagement that runs itself' are marketing: Knock agents propose changes on a branch for your review, and output quality depends on your data and prompts.
