HYPE OR FACT? · CHECKED 29 OCTOBER 2026

Vercel CI: '2-6× faster CI', built for agents

OUR VERDICT

Fact

Our original verdict: “Fact or hype: real and documented; the 2-6× speed-up is Vercel's own figure from its internal repositories, and the post says so.”

THE CLAIM

“Introducing Vercel CI: intelligently skips tasks with Turborepo, 2-6× faster CI in our internal repositories, optimised for agents via Vercel MCP and CLI; nearly 8 million tasks so far; in beta on all plans.”

What’s actually true

  • CI (continuous integration) means your tests and build checks run automatically every time code changes. Vercel CI does this on every git push to GitHub and posts a pass/fail check on the pull request, so branch protection can block a broken merge, the same way a failing GitHub Action does.
  • It uses Turborepo's task graph: you tag tasks with "ci" in turbo.json, and only tasks your change affected run; the rest are restored from Remote Cache or skipped. You don't need a monorepo (Vercel says it works in single-package repos too), but you do need to add turbo.json and the turbo package (Turborepo 2.11.7 or later, Vercel CLI 64.3.1 or later).
  • The '2-6× faster' figure is Vercel's own measurement of time from git push to 'CI passed' in its internal repositories, and the post says so. There's no published benchmark on customer repos, and the gain depends on how much of each push can be skipped or cached. 'Nearly 8 million tasks' is also Vercel's own figure (internal repos plus the private beta).
  • The agent angle is real: a coding agent can set it up with a ready-made skill (npx skills use vercel/ci@setup), and runs and logs can be read through the Vercel CLI (vc ci ls / inspect / logs / grep), Vercel MCP and the API.
  • Beta limits: GitHub is the only supported code host, Linux the only base image, git push the only trigger; the repository must be connected to a Vercel project, and not to projects on several Vercel teams. Vercel says features and configuration may change.
  • Compared with GitHub Actions: Actions is general-purpose, works without Turborepo, is free for public repositories and includes $12 a month of compute on GitHub's free plan. Vercel CI's advantage is skipping and caching unchanged work with no workflow YAML to maintain; it posts its result to GitHub alongside your other checks.

Cost

Pro: $0.0035 per CPU minute. Each task gets 2 CPUs by default (so $0.007 a minute) and each run's setup step 4 CPUs; skipped or cached tasks cost nothing. Enterprise: custom. 'In beta on all plans', but the pricing page lists no Hobby (free plan) rate, so it's unclear what free accounts get. For comparison, a standard GitHub Actions Linux runner is $0.006 a minute, free on public repositories.

USE IT IF

Teams (or solo builders using coding agents) with a GitHub repo already on Vercel, a real test or build suite and frequent pushes, especially JavaScript/TypeScript projects that already use Turborepo.

SKIP IT IF

Non-technical builders without a test suite or GitHub-connected repo, anyone on GitLab or Bitbucket, or anyone needing Windows or macOS runners. A small static site deployed straight from the Vercel CLI gains nothing yet.
