Satya Nadella's '10 AI chiefs of staff'
OUR VERDICT
Partly factOur original verdict: “Fact or hype: partly fact. He did say it, but the "chiefs of staff" mostly summarise and prepare.”
THE CLAIM
“Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella uses at least 10 custom Copilot agents, which he describes as his AI chiefs of staff.”
What’s actually true
- Nadella said this himself in a Bloomberg interview in May 2025. He uses at least 10 custom agents built in Copilot Studio and calls them his 'AI chiefs of staff'. The FT repeats the claim in its 30 Oct 2026 report on AI and leadership.
- The jobs he described are routine: summarising Outlook and Teams messages, preparing for meetings, doing research, and talking through podcast transcripts on the drive to work. They aren't running the company or making decisions.
- It's the CEO of the company that sells Copilot talking about Copilot. There's no independent measure of how much time it saves him.
- The same FT piece says Meta is building an AI avatar of Mark Zuckerberg to talk to staff. That was reported by the FT in April 2026, from unnamed sources, as an early-stage project, not a finished product.
