A Grok Bot insider's guide to building good bots and managing a team of them

OUR VERDICT

Fact

Our original verdict: “Fact or hype: fact. Every feature she mentions exists in Grok Bot, and she works on the product, so it's first-hand, practical advice rather than a claim of results. It's an insider's tips, so it naturally promotes the product.”

THE CLAIM

“"Here's a short Grok Bot guide on how I create high-quality bots and manage my team." Start from her bot-designer template ('dr eggbot'), keep a few good bots rather than many, have them write skills as you teach them, give them connectors, the vault, their own inbox and accounts, onboard them like an intern, and brain-dump by voice before asking the bot to restate it in its own words.”

What’s actually true

  • The author, lauren (@poteto), works on Grok Bot at SpaceXAI and is on the React Compiler core team (previously Cursor, Meta and Netflix), so this is first-hand.
  • Her bot-designer template, 'dr eggbot', is live at x.ai/bot. It asks a few preference questions, then creates bots for you.
  • The features she relies on all exist: bot templates, skills that a bot writes for itself as you teach it a task, connectors to the apps you use, the vault for logins and cards, a bot's own email inbox, and voice input or transcription.
  • The advice is practical rather than a promise of results. Keep a few good bots instead of a big team; spot repetitive copy-paste steps you could hand over; onboard a bot like an intern; and, her favourite tip, brain-dump by voice and then ask the bot to 'restate this in your own words' to check it understood.
  • Caveats: it's an insider's tips, so it naturally promotes the product. And more bots and routines use more of your usage allowance, which matters this week, when users report limits running out early and Musk says serving costs were unsustainably high.
  • Giving a bot accounts, an inbox and vault access means it can act for you. Keep approvals on anything that sends, posts or pays, and only give it the access each job needs.

Cost

The guide and template are free. You need a Grok Bot plan, and every extra bot or scheduled routine uses more of your usage allowance.

USE IT IF

Grok Bot users who want to go from one assistant to a small, reliable team, and anyone setting up their first bots.

SKIP IT IF

Anyone looking for proof of business results, or who doesn't want to give a bot access to their accounts and inbox.
