HYPE OR FACT? · CHECKED 20 OCTOBER 2026

'17-year-old runs 300 Grok Bots for under $0.02 a bot a week'

OUR VERDICT

Hype

Our original verdict: “The story is hype, the principles are real.”

THE CLAIM

“A 17-year-old CS student from China runs 300 Grok Bots for under $0.02 per bot a week, plus a list of '20 GitHub repos to make Grok Bot setup cheaper'.”

What’s actually true

  • The student is anonymous and can't be checked; the author's own quoted article never mentions a student or 300 bots.
  • The maths doesn't work: it implies a 750x cost cut, while the author's own article claims an 8x token saving, and Grok Bot is billed as plan subscriptions with included usage, not dollars per bot.
  • The video is a 24-second motion graphic with no screen footage, logs or receipts, and its repo list doesn't match the post's or the article's.
  • What's real: the habits (fewer empty checks, compact handoffs, retry caps, waking on events) do cut usage, and all 20 repos exist, but most are Python libraries for people making their own LLM API calls. LiteLLM's PyPI versions 1.82.7 and 1.82.8 were compromised with credential-stealing malware in March 2026.
