HYPE OR FACT? · CHECKED 23 OCTOBER 2026
Block's Dessa: a voice AI that listens while it talks
OUR VERDICT
Partly factOur original verdict: “Fact or hype? Mostly a real research preview, but nothing you can use yet.”
THE CLAIM
“Block unveiled Dessa, a full-duplex speech-to-speech model that listens and talks at once, trained only on human conversation audio, billed as a 'world's first'.”
What’s actually true
- Block says Dessa talks and listens at the same time, was trained from scratch only on recordings of human conversation with no text, and runs on a high-end MacBook Pro.
- There's no product, API, pricing, paper or benchmarks, so every quality claim, including 'world's first', is Block's own. The Verge found the demos 'a little awkward and uncanny'.
- Access is limited to a small group of AI safety researchers plus a reported waitlist.
